Coarse rutile grains for speckles and flecks of color in glazes and clay.
You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.
What it is
Rutile is a natural mineral: titanium dioxide with some iron. Ground to a powder, it's famous for streaky, variegated "rutile" glazes. This granular grade is coarse, so instead of blending in, the grains leave small dark speckles and bursts of color.
Getting started
- Start at 0.5 to 1% (half a gram to 1 gram per 100 grams of dry glaze) and test.
- Stir it in after you sieve the glaze, or the sieve will catch the grains.
- A small amount in a clay body gives a speckled stoneware look.
- Want the smooth, streaky rutile look instead? That comes from powdered rutile, not granular.
For glaze formulators
- Natural rutile, mostly TiO₂ with iron. Because it's mined, its iron and titanium content varies from lot to lot.
- The grains partly melt and bleed color around each speck; hotter firings and more fluid glazes bleed more.
Safety
- Low toxicity, but don't breathe the dust. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (N95 or better) when handling it, and clean up with a wet sponge, not a broom.
