A strong, opaque green for glazes. Small amounts go a long way, and it reacts with other ingredients in surprising ways.

You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.

What it is

A dark green powder that gives glazes a solid, opaque green. It doesn't melt into the glaze easily, so too much makes the surface dry and dull. It's also known for changing color around other ingredients: next to tin it turns pink, and with zinc it turns brown.

Getting started

  • Start at 0.5% in a clear or white base glaze: half a gram per 100 grams of dry glaze. Most glazes use 2% or less.
  • Use a base glaze without zinc if you want green. Zinc turns chrome brown.
  • Watch your kiln load: chrome can vaporize and turn nearby glazes that contain tin oxide pink.
  • Fire a test tile before you glaze a whole batch.

For glaze formulators

  • Chromium(III) oxide, Cr₂O₃. Very refractory.
  • Color depends on the base: calcium, potassium, sodium, barium and magnesium fluxes all shift it.
  • With tin oxide: chrome-tin pinks and reds (the basis of chrome-tin pink stains). With zinc: browns. With cobalt: teals and blue-greens.
  • Used with iron, cobalt and manganese in black glazes and stains.

Safety

  • Don't breathe the dust. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (N95 or better) and gloves when handling it dry. Clean up with a wet sponge, not a broom.
  • Keep it away from food areas, children and pets. For functional ware, use a stable, tested base glaze, and have the finished glaze lab-tested before you sell the work.

This bag's price stays the same at every level, but it still counts toward your full-bag total.
